Hypnosis To Lose Weight - What Type Of Foods To Eat

Monday, April 6th, 2009

I was recently asked by a young woman if she ate unhealthy food but in small amounts will she be able to lose weight.  And the reason she questioned this is because she had a male friend who ate very little but he would eat junk.  Cookies, chips etc.  Not what anyone would consider  a diet of food.  So to answer that question more fully I decided to go over some of the basics of nutrition and weight loss.

Calories in, calories out.

On a very simple level, weight loss can be equated strictly with the number of calories you put into your body and then subtract the amount of energy you expend in caloric value.  You need to eat an amount that is less than what you burn in order to lose weight.

With that said there is a number of variables that will affect each individual’s weight loss as well.

Man vs. Woman

One of those seems to be gender.  Women naturally have more fatty tissues available to them, and this is for survival of themselves and the species.  Fatty tissues that support the reproductive system and are necessary for our human survival.

What is your age?

Another factor is age.  As we age, our body’s metabolism usually slows down, so food intake should adjust to our aging.  Unfortunately, as we age we often condition ourselves to eating for comfort.  We have more unpleasant experiences which require comforting and so we eat for comfort more often.  The longer we do this the more habitual this becomes.  And this works against us as well.

Re-Conditioning

To overcome this conditioning requires mentally retraining ourselves to respond in a different way that is more appropriate for what it is that we truly want to become.  If you want to lose weight, you will want to condition yourself to respond to food as if it is just fuel for your body and not a way of getting comfort.  You need to train yourself to rely on other means to derive comfort.

Hypnosis - A way to take back control

While this might seem difficult for some, the good news is that by using hypnosis you can accomplish this pretty easily.  Changing your mind from the source, is the quickest way to make changes that are unthinking.  And you already know how effective that is as it has been your unthinking programming that has probably gotten you into this trouble already.

What is your BMI?

Another thing that is important is what is your BMI.  That is your Body Mass Index.  It will determine if you are fat or not.  Muscle is important, and you want to make sure that you are not losing muscle just to have a lower number on the bathroom scale.  The number really has less meaning than the way you look, feel, fit into your clothes, and how you get around in the world.  That is the type of fitness that is most important.  Here is a free BMI calculator for finding out your  Body Mass Index over at this link:  http://hypnoticstate.com/hypnosis-tools/hypnosis-bmi-calculator.html

Thin or Healthy?  Why not both?

And finally, do you want to be thin or healthy?  Do you want to be attractive, or just be able to say you weigh a particular number?  Your answer will probably be that being thin will provide you with something other than bragging rights over how much you weigh.  Most people want to lose weight because they want to feel better and be more attractive.  Increase their self esteem, improve their chances for promotion at work, or socially.  It’s really about feeling better more than about looking better.  The result of fitting into your clothes more comfortably.  The freedom of not having to focus on food and meals so much, so you can put your mind onto other more productive and pleasing thoughts.

Self Hypnosis To Reprogram Your Thoughts

You can learn to refocus your mind on a healthier life, and lifestyle using self hypnosis.  You can take an active role in re programming your mind to think the thoughts that make you feel more successful, which will lead you to being more successful.  There is a great free course on using self hypnosis to lose weight that you can get over here: http://hypnoticstate.com/hypnosis/lose-weight.html

Long Term Consequences

There are also long term health consequences that result from eating unhealthy foods.  So all of your worries and concerns over weight might be short lived if you find yourself succumbing to a life threatening ailment as a result of eating really poorly.

Weight Loss Hypnosis-Is Hypnosis Effective For Weight Loss?

How Effective Is Hypnosis For Weight Loss?

Since many of the people I speak with and hear from ask similar questions, I feel it necessary to supply the answers, not only to them, but to everyone else as well. Because if it’s on their mind, that same question is probably on your mind as well. And one of the most common questions asked of me about hypnosis for weight loss is whether hypnosis is effective for weight loss.

I probably do more sessions for weight loss in my office than for any other issue. Using hypnosis to help build new habits is very helpful in providing my clients with the tools necessary to regain control over their behaviors. Hypnosis is extremely effective in changing our perceptions of things. As in the case of pain management, we can change our perception of pain. Because pain is a perceived, or interpreted response, we can change how we experience that feeling. In cases of pain, we can change the response to one of pressure, or heat, or even remove it completely. These are all things we do naturally, but haphazardly because we don’t know how to control our experience. But using hypnosis for pain we are able to change the way we experience pain.

How Can Changing Our Perceptions Help In Weight Loss?

Now in the case of weight loss, we can take that ability to change perceptions and use it to change our perceptions of what food is. Food is really fuel for our bodies but often we haphazardly program ourselves to connect food with comfort. Using Hypnosis for weight loss we can change that perception. We respond to foods differently. In some cultures bugs and dogs are considered food. In our culture we don’t consider them food, but you can see that humans do have the ability to change our perceptions of what is considered appropriate nourishment. So with hypnosis we can dictate which foods are appealing, and which foods are revolting. Do you think this could be helpful to you as you work to build more appropriate habits that are designed for a healthier lifestyle? I think so too.

Studies Prove Hypnosis For Weight Loss Is Effective

Now I’ve given you just a couple of examples (I use many different approaches to weight loss hypnosis based upon each of my client’s individual needs) of how hypnosis can be effective for weight loss, but you don’t have to take my word for it. There are many studies available that back up my own experiences. There’s a study listed on the National Institute of Health’s website, published in the Journal Of Consulting And Clinical Psychology that shows that hypnosis improved weight loss by double. That is a 100% improvement of weight loss when used in conjunction with a weight loss plan. This study was done at Department of Psychology, University of Connecticut, by I. Kirsch in 1996.

If you found a way to double your success rate with weight loss wouldn’t you want to use it? If you were able to change your relationship with food forever, would you?

I invite you to learn some simple self hypnosis techniques to help you get started in changing your mind about the way you relate to food. I have a free mini course to help you begin right here: Self Hypnosis For Weight Loss

Hypnosis New York-Is It Effective For Weight Loss?

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

This is a common question that I get.  I’ll also respond to the question of whether hypnosis is dangerous as this is a common misconception and myth about hypnosis.  I’ll answer the second question first.

Is Hypnosis for weight loss dangerous?
One of the things that make people hesitate to use the services of a hypnotist or to use self hypnosis is that they think that hypnosis is dangerous.  Well in all cases, the answer to this question is absolutely not.  Part of what people seek when they are looking to use a hypnotist is to find someone who will make them do something that they can’t do or don’t want to do.  Kind of like giving someone the power to make them into a zombie of sorts or Stepford wife.  And this notion that they could have this kind of relationship with another person is what also scares them.  Well the hypnotist can’t turn you into an unwilling participant in anything!  The hypnotist can only help you with what you are willing and able to accomplish.  Working with a hypnotist will help you to see, feel and act fully congruent with what you really want to accomplish.  So there is no danger in seeking the help of a hypnotist or in using self hypnosis techniques to assist you in short or long term goals.

Now onto the second question:

Is Weight Loss Hypnosis Effective?

Hypnosis is a word that describes a state of mind that allows new ideas, beliefs, and behaviors to be accepted into a willing participant’s mind without critical or judgmental scrutiny.  This lessens the likelihood   of rejection.  So someone coming to see me with a desire to lose weight will be guided into this special experience where prior agreed upon suggestions will be presented for acceptance.  During this time changes in perceptions will occur.  Using emotions to trigger positive responses to the behaviors that produce weight loss will be installed.  So that when my client eats the right kind of food in the right proportions they will feel powerful positive feelings.  I will also use emotions to trigger negative responses to the behaviors that have been keeping them fat or contributing to their unhealthy problems.  So that when they look at foods they want to avoid they will feel powerful negative feelings that keep them from wanting to indulge in those unhealthy foods and/or behaviors.

Each hypnotist approaches their clients, and their client’s problems in their own unique way.  I require my clients to commit to making the changes and commit to a series of sessions.  It is quite clear that the best weight loss programs are designed around a support system, and I view my work in the same way.  The series of sessions act as a support system for my clients as they build the new behaviors and responses into their lifestyle.

You probably already know that habits are what make our lives easier.  Habits help us to do repetitive tasks without thinking, so we can focus on what really needs our attention during our normal day to day existence.  With any change in lifestyle we are looking to develop habits that make it easy for us to maintain and continue this lifestyle.  So as we develop the habits of a healthy and fit person they become who we are.

Is It Temporary?

Someone responded to this question noting that the results of hypnosis are temporary.  Nothing could be further from the truth, but this again is a common myth and misconception.  Hypnosis is as temporary as any knowledge that we know and learn.  When you learn to ride a bicycle is that learning temporary?  Even if you stopped riding for many years, does that mean that it’s temporary?  No, of course not!  Of course we could choose to ride or not ride, because that is our free will.  Again, we need to review that hypnosis is not dangerous.  If hypnosis was about taking away my clients choice, that would be dangerous.  But by connecting my clients to many positive responses to the correct behaviors, they’re able to use those good feelings to guide them to a healthy and fit new life.

Hypnosis For Weight Loss - The Single Most Important Behavior For Weight Loss

How To Lose Weight While Eating

Ok, here it is. It is one of the most simple things you can do. It is extremely effective and powerful. And yet, when I first explain to you what it is, you’re probably going to put it aside, ignore it, or say to yourself, “that’s so simple”, or ” I knew that”. Don’t be put off the simplistic nature of what I’m about to reveal. Remember the power is in the action you take, not in your own conscious thoughts. So here is the simple strategy that will guarantee that you will reduce your weight. Allow yourself to only eat in a few specific locations. Period. That’s it, the simple strategy that will allow you to lose weight fast and steadily. There are some additional fine points that I’m going to make but that is pretty much it, in a nutshell.

Where You Eat Will Make You Fat

That’s right, your location choice of where you eat, or dine will most definitely make you fat. Some of those places that you have eaten in the past that have caused you to put on weight are sitting at your desk at work, sitting on the couch in front of the television, sitting in front of the computer, lying on your bed, standing around in the kitchen, or at work, or walking around eating, snacking, or drinking. These are the places that cause weight gain, and prevent weight loss. As far as walking around and eating, the Japanese culture has it correctly. You will rarely see Japanese people walking around the streets eating food. It is culturally unacceptable, even rude. This is obviously a learned behavior that has become accepted in our culture. There is a cure for this…STOP IT!

Mindful choices of where you eat are as important as when you eat and what you choose to eat. That’s because you want to have your full attention on the foods that you are eating. You want to focus and enjoy the foods, relish the taste, flavor, texture, and aroma. Know that you are eating and eating slowly and you will easily become aware of when you have eaten enough and naturally stop. When you focus on the mechanics of eating, you have no distractions and you are able to control the amount of foods you supply your body with, as well as fully enjoy what it is that you are eating. It’s called mindful eating.

How To Develop Mindful Eating

The simple way of developing mindful eating is to create the associations of good feelings with the places that you allow yourself the comfort of eating, and create the associations of bad, uncomfortable feelings with the places that you no longer will accept as places to eat food. In my office in NYC I regularly use hypnosis to facilitate this change in my clients. You can use the self hypnosis techniques that I teach in my self hypnosis mini course to mentally rehearse these pleasure and pain associations on your own as well. Even using your conscious mind to make a change, while taking longer to accomplish, will help you in developing the new habits of a healthy and fit person. And that’s what this is all about, creating the habits of a healthy and fit person.

In Summary

You have the power to take back control of your eating behaviors. It is a simple process once you identify those behaviors that are causing you to gain weight. I have found that many of the clients that come to see me are unaware of what the behaviors are that are the cause of their weight problem. There is also those who know what they are doing wrong, but can’t seem to make the change on their own. Those people are usually driven more by the emotional pleasure they derive from the behavior, or even from the distractive nature of the behavior rather than the need to consume nutrition for survival. With those people it is necessary to work through what feeling component is to their unwelcome behavior before they can make changes in the behavior itself.

Sign up for my weight loss self hypnosis mini course and learn the techniques that will hasten the process of change for you. Take back control of your life, and do it now. Nothing happens until something moves.

I’d really like to read your comments on this post. What you think is important to me. I get a bunch of emails from people looking to make changes and your comments will help.

Hypnosis For Weight Loss: The Single Most Important Change To Make To Lose Weight

What Are The New Behaviors For Weight Loss?

In an earlier article I discussed how hypnosis can be used to make lifestyle changes that will become habits. These new habits will lead to an overweight person becoming a lean, physically and emotionally healthier person. Now I received a bunch of questions about what are the habits that I work on to help an overweight person create change? And since there were so many questions about what these habits are I decided to write a series of articles explaining the basic habit changes necessary or most desirable that will lead to the quickest change in your weight status.

What’s The Number 1 Habit Of A Healthy And Fit Person?

Eat Regularly- Especially Breakfast!

You probably heard that one before. In fact it’s probably even now bouncing around inside your head and it’s probably still anchored to the voice of your mother telling you to eat breakfast, or asking you as you were running out the door for school, whether you had your breakfast. You probably heard them say that students who ate a good morning meal were more attentive in class and better learners. Well, take a moment to thank mom, for trying to set you straight. It seems to hold true that if you eat a “good” breakfast you will be healthier, more alert and function better during the day. Here’s some of the theory behind having a good breakfast. You see that word breakfast? It literally means breaking your fast. That’s the fast you did all night while you were sleeping. It’s like a mini hibernation.

“Take Out The Papers And The Trash…”

While you were sleeping, your body was busy using all the fuel (food, nutrients, etc.) you consumed during the day to rebuild and resupply the parts of your body that were in need. Anything left over was either put into the trash system and shipped out of your body, or stored for some other time. The amount set aside for storage depends upon what your body figures will be available or unavailable in the near future. So your body has some kind of mechanism that monitors the availability of fuel and changes your storage needs based upon that information. Where does that information come from? Your very own behavior.

So It’s All About Survival!

If you don’t eat regularly, your own body interprets that as a sign of food shortage. And if there is a food shortage, there is a real threat you could starve. That is how your body operates. Your body doesn’t really care much as to whether you can fit into that designer dress or suit you just bought and had custom fitted. Your body’s more interested in whether you’ll be around tomorrow to procreate and keep the species going. That’s the big picture. Everything else (designer clothes, self-esteem, respect from others, etc.) is secondary. So what do you think happens if you starve yourself to lose weight? Your body goes into a food storage orgy. You start to get really stingy about using up your food stores. You hold onto and build up your fat reserves. That’s one of the reasons why restrictive diets don’t work. So you must eat in order to lose weight. You must eat in order to let your survival monitor know that you are not starving and everything is A-OK. In fact you must make sure that you maintain at least a minimum amount of calories coming in everyday so that you don’t trigger that starvation/hoard program that’s built in for your survival.

Getting Back To Breakfast.

Breakfast is literally breaking the fast that we just experienced all night long. We haven’t eaten now for the longest stretch of time during our 24 hour day. When we awaken in the morning the quickest way to let your survival monitor know that everything is OK, and we are not starving, is to eat something. Start supplying food to your body as early as you can after you get up and your body’s metabolism will kick in and start burning up the fat resources it’s been hoarding as well as the new food you’re taking in. It returns your metabolism to it’s normal waking rate after it’s been slowed down for your sleep period. This will make sure that you will be burning off the foods you take in as well as the old foods you stored as fat.

In Summary,

EAT BREAKFAST! DO NOT SKIP MEALS! You can get some help with this by using self hypnosis and visualization techniques to get you quickly into the habit of following these behaviors. You can learn to do self hypnosis free by signing up for my 5 day mini course in self hypnosis right on this page in the upper right hand side of the page.

Now that you know the secret to jump starting your metabolism each day, my next article will show you how to get the most out of the physical act of eating. Grab my RSS FEED so you don’t miss out on the next technique I’ll be sharing with you. Knowing just this one simple, easy to follow and implement technique will help you to consistently drop pounds, and inches until you are down to your ideal weight.
