I was recently asked by a young woman if she ate unhealthy food but in small amounts will she be able to lose weight. And the reason she questioned this is because she had a male friend who ate very little but he would eat junk. Cookies, chips etc. Not what anyone would consider a diet of food. So to answer that question more fully I decided to go over some of the basics of nutrition and weight loss.
Calories in, calories out.
On a very simple level, weight loss can be equated strictly with the number of calories you put into your body and then subtract the amount of energy you expend in caloric value. You need to eat an amount that is less than what you burn in order to lose weight.
With that said there is a number of variables that will affect each individual’s weight loss as well.
Man vs. Woman
One of those seems to be gender. Women naturally have more fatty tissues available to them, and this is for survival of themselves and the species. Fatty tissues that support the reproductive system and are necessary for our human survival.
What is your age?
Another factor is age. As we age, our body’s metabolism usually slows down, so food intake should adjust to our aging. Unfortunately, as we age we often condition ourselves to eating for comfort. We have more unpleasant experiences which require comforting and so we eat for comfort more often. The longer we do this the more habitual this becomes. And this works against us as well.
To overcome this conditioning requires mentally retraining ourselves to respond in a different way that is more appropriate for what it is that we truly want to become. If you want to lose weight, you will want to condition yourself to respond to food as if it is just fuel for your body and not a way of getting comfort. You need to train yourself to rely on other means to derive comfort.

Thin or Healthy? Why not both?
And finally, do you want to be thin or healthy? Do you want to be attractive, or just be able to say you weigh a particular number? Your answer will probably be that being thin will provide you with something other than bragging rights over how much you weigh. Most people want to lose weight because they want to feel better and be more attractive. Increase their self esteem, improve their chances for promotion at work, or socially. It’s really about feeling better more than about looking better. The result of fitting into your clothes more comfortably. The freedom of not having to focus on food and meals so much, so you can put your mind onto other more productive and pleasing thoughts.
