A colleague of mine reported a study that involved thousands of smokers who either quit smoking cold turkey, or used a gradual method to stop smoking. The study reported that there was no difference in the success of either of these methods, abrupt “cold turkey” quit smoking, or gradual weaning off of cigarettes to stop smoking.
In my own opinion, I don’t believe there is any such thing as quitting “cold turkey”.
There is no quitting, or changing of any habituation without the use of hypnosis. Either
learned through self discovery, or learned through a professional, in one on one, or group situations. Period. The myth that people can change without any help or knowledge of how
to properly use their mind to create change is just that…a myth.
Some people stumble upon the process that helps them change, others use the help of a
professional. But in any case, these studies distort the very nature of creating change, and that is all about learning how to use your mind correctly for the outcome that you want.
In both of these cases, the frame was set out the beginning, as to whether the smoker wanted to and beleived they could stop abruptly, or they believed they needed to wean themselves off of cigarettes. What was not at all discussed or studied was how they went about quitting. The mental strategies that each individual uses is the only determinant of success or failure with changing any habit.
